Beach and village of La Franqui – Port Leucate

North of the town, La Franqui was the first seaside resort in the Aude region in the 19th century and retains a slightly retro charm. Its long, fine sandy beach, with its shallow water, stretches at the foot of the cliff; the Grazel, a small inlet connected to the lagoon, offers a calm swimming spot for children. Those with a curious eye will pass by Villa Amélie, the birthplace of the adventurer and writer Henry de Monfreid.

Oysters at the shellfish farms – Port Leucate

On the edge of the lagoon, the oyster farmers' village of Leucate is home to huts where you can sample the local Mediterranean oysters, mussels, and clams. Note that these are not restaurants: they are for a simple tasting, ideally with a reservation. The tourist office maintains a list of producers. About ten minutes from Port Leucate, an easy 8.5 km loop starts from the parking lot of the Leucate-village tourist office. It passes by the lighthouse, Cap des Frères headland, and the edge of the cliffs, with the Mediterranean Sea below, as well as across the plateau, between the vineyards of Cap Leucate, dry stone walls, and an old mill. On a clear day, the view extends as far as the Canigou mountain. Bring a map: the trail markers are discreet.

Caldes de Malavella, spa town – Vidreres

Neighboring Vidreres, Caldes de Malavella has thrived on its hot springs since antiquity. On the Puig de Sant Grau, the Roman baths, built around 50 AD, are the best-preserved remains of the ancient Aquae Calidae. Continue on foot to the Font de la Mina, where the water gushes forth at approximately 60°C, then along the promenade lined with summer villas and the Vichy Catalan spa, designed by Gaietà Buïgas.

Camiral Golf, ex-PGA Catalunya – Vidreres

Just a few minutes from Vidreres, in the municipality of Caldes de Malavella, the Camiral complex was known as PGA Catalunya until 2022. It features two courses designed by Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles: the Stadium, a par 72 course opened in 1999 and host of the Spanish Open the following year, and the Tour, a slightly shorter course.
